What Happens During a Root Canal?

The root canal process is surprisingly straightforward, and despite what rumors or myths you’ve maybe heard about the procedure, you aren’t going to be dealing with a great amount of pain since your mouth will be fully numbed. A small hole is carefully made in the affected tooth to access its interior, known as the pulp (and normally the source of the pain). The infected and damaged pulp tissue is removed, and the tooth is cleared out, sanitized, and filled with a special biocompatible material called gutta-percha. Finally, a dental crown restoration can be placed on top of the tooth to ensure its protection.
