What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants refer to small posts that are surgically placed directly into a patient’s jawbone, to act as replacement tooth roots. Since they’re made from biocompatible materials, like titanium or zirconia, they can fuse with bone tissue in order to form a stable foundation for a custom dental restoration. This is something that other dental restorations cannot offer. Dental implants can replace any number of missing teeth, no matter where they’re located within the mouth. Better yet, placing them is straightforward and they also come with all kinds of life-changing benefits.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – As with any type of surgery, the first step is meeting with us for a consultation. Not everyone is immediately eligible for dental implants; your jawbone density, gum health, and other factors must be considered, and some patients must undergo preliminary treatment beforehand.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – We can complete the entire dental implant process here at our Klein dental office, meaning you won’t need to worry about coordinating with other teams or offices. The procedure itself isn’t overly complicated; the jawbone is accessed through the gumline and the implants are placed. On average, it takes an hour to place a dental implant.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – After they’ve been placed, the implants will begin fusing with the bone tissue through a process called osseointegration. This can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months, but know that it’s setting your implants up for decades of success. Once things have healed properly, abutments can be placed on top of the implant posts, which eventually secure your replacement teeth.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – We will schedule your appointment to deliver your final restoration once the abutments have been placed and everything looks healthy. Dental implants can be used to support any type of restoration, so know that your smile will look, feel, and function better than ever before once you’ve received your new teeth!
